Mr. Qasim Nawaz
Independent Director/Chairman
Mr. Qasim Nawaz has served State Bank of Pakistan for over 35 years in various positions. Joining the SBP in April 1988 he was promoted as Executive Director in 2009 and was pasted as Managing Director of SBP Banking Services Corporation, a fully owned subsidiary of the central bank established by an Act of the Parliament. He also remained the Executive Director In-charge of Banking Supervision and the HR Groups of State Bank, besides holding the position of the BCP Coordinator for SBP, and SBP BSC.
During his distinguished career with the Bank, Mr. Nawaz has held various key positions and was responsible for formulation of policy and preparations instructions relating to financing by banks and DFIs in the areas of Industrial Finance, Trade Finance, Exchange and Debt Management, Microfinance, SME Finance, Housing Finance, and Foreign Exchange Adjudication.
After his promotion as Director in 2005, Mr. Nawaz headed the Foreign Exchange Adjudications, Accounts, Currency Management, and the departments responsible for policy development relating to SME, Microfinance, Housing and Infrastructure Finance.
During his posting as MD SBP BSC (2009-2012 and 2014 to 2018), he led the team to revamp the functions of the corporation with the focus an automation in the areas of currency management, government banking, Foreign Exchange Operations, besides playing a key role in introduction of Knowledge Management, a key tool to perform the office functions in the Corporation as also the State Bank, as a replacement of the old paper based office work environment.
Mr. Nawaz has remained Chairman and active member of the various committees formulated in the State Bank to facilitate collective decision making process. As MD SBP BSC, he was also ex-officio member of its Board, besides serving on the Boards of Pakistan Security Printing Corporation, and National Institute of Banking and Finance, HR Committee of the Institute of Bankers Pakistan.
Mr. Nawaz also played key role in negotiation of various financing facilities for SBP from the Asian Development Bank and Department for International Development, UK. Mr. Nawaz has also received extensive training from multilateral financial institution in addition to completing six months’ attachment with the Financial Services Authority U K in 2002-2003.
Mr. Nawaz did his MBA from Quaid-I-Azam University Islamabad and also holds the DAIBP from the Institute of Bankers Pakistan.
